To: Friends of City College of San Francisco

From: Julia Bergman, retired City College librarian, and many others

We, the undersigned supporters, friends, students, alumni, and current and retired employees of City College of San Francisco, must express our outrage and sadness over the complaint filed by Kamala Harris, San Francisco’s District Attorney, against three City College administrators (former Chancellor Dr. Philip R. Day, Jr., and current administrators Stephen Herman and James Blomquist).  They are charged with felonies and misdemeanors related to the temporary misplacement of District funds, and the perceived misuse of  the Chancellor’s discretionary funds.  The three administrators received no personal benefit or gain from their alleged wrongdoings, and the funds that had been allegedly misused were repaid.

City College serves over 100,000 students every year, many of whom are from low socio-economic backgrounds, people of color, recently unemployed, or immigrants.  The community college is the only hope for many people to obtain a college education, or workforce training.  As the often perceived stepchild of the California higher education system, it is well known that community colleges have been perennially under funded.  Over many years, due to the lack of state funding, City College facilities became dilapidated, and fell into disrepair.

It is against this backdrop that our three administrators worked tirelessly to raise funds in support of two bond campaigns which would provide funding for the repair of existing buildings, and the construction of new ones.  As a result of their focused leadership, dedication, and passion for current and future students, the 2001 and 2005 bond campaigns were broadly supported by the voters of San Francisco.  This is a partial list of major renovations, new buildings and campuses, initiated, completed, or currently in progress, partially or completely funded by the bonds:

  • Student Health Center
  • Orfala Family Center
  • Health & Wellness Center
  • a new Mission Campus and
  • a new campus for Chinatown/North Beach
  • Practice Field
  • Joint Use Classroom Building
  • Performing Arts Complex
  • John Adams Campus Renovation
  • Science Building Renovation
  • Creative Arts Building Renovation
  • Evans Campus Purchase
  • Balboa Reservoir Infrastructure
  • American Disability Act Upgrades
  • Downtown Campus Renovation

For generations to come, San Franciscans in every corner of the City will benefit from these facilities.  The collective, professional efforts of former Chancellor Dr. Philip R Day, Jr., Stephen Herman, and James Blomquist, hard working administrators, transformed the morale of the College, and beautifully and dramatically transformed the places where people teach and learn.  Also note that the Day administration brought a historical level of collaboration among all the organizations within the College.

The District Attorney’s office has great discretion over cases it chooses to prosecute. Two grand juries did not indict the named administrators on similar charges.  The District Attorney filed the complaint on her own authority. By doing so, she damaged the reputation of City College of San Francisco, and jeopardized the future of affordable higher education throughout the Bay Area, and especially for the citizens of San Francisco.

I fully support the letter and all efforts to end prosecution of Dr Day, Mr Herman and Mr Blomquist. I fully believe that none of what is alleged is accurate in depicting either criminal activity or intent. Instead, Dr Day and his administrative staff should be applauded for taking City College through its most intense period of building and development since the end of World War II, and expanding education resources and opportunity for the residents of California.

I support your letter. I know Dr Day and James Blomquist. They are both dedicated to the good of the students and the well being of the college. They are victums of petty bean counters and I am really sorry to be part of a city that allows politics to get in the way of people working for the general good of the community.

  5. Janey Skinner Says:

    Please add my name too.

  6. Kathy Hennig Says:

The filing of these charges is most unfortunate, especially for these individuals who were working so hard for the college. No one put funds into their personal accounts. I don’t see how these mistakes can be called felonies.

  7. Andrew Sohn Says:

I am an architect in San Francisco that has had the pleasure of working with City College and Jim Blomquist over the past few years. Mr. Blomquist has been a great client. He always allowed you to be heard, appreciated common sense, and has been truly committed to the completion of great projects that served the best interests of the school. He reinforced the ideals of fairness, community inclusiveness, and the need for the College to get good value for their construction dollar. I wholeheartedly endorse the letter and support Jim Blomquist.

  8. Sue Lim Yee Says:

Thank you Julia for your letter. I also support it. Dr. Day provided outstanding leadership for our college. I was fortunate to work with Stephen Herman on the CNB Campus. He was an excellent instructor, and moved on to become a very competent administrator. Jim Blomquist helped CNB with its new campus. These 3 individuals worked hard to serve students, and were dedicated to providing quality education.

  9. Frank J. Wetta Says:

Phil Day has a long professional history of dedication to the welfare of community college students. I know, for example, of his special concern for single mothers seeking an education from the time I worked with him in Florida. These charges are unfair, unsupportable, and unwarrented. I strongly support your letter and hope the authorities wil have the good sense to see what thousands of others across the country see — that Phil Day is a good, honest, and decent man.

  10. Madeline Mueller Says:

I have read the charges against “The City College Three” many times. They remind me of the story of the boy who was found busy digging through a large pile of horse manure. When asked why he was doing such a thing, he replied, “With this much ____, there’s got to be a pony in here somewhere.” Is there?

The District Attorney’s office and some local newspapers have put forth pages and pages (piles and piles) of accusations. Most of the charges are against Dr. Philip Day and Stephen Herman, and are grouped around the donations, routing, and some expenditures of funds from three vendors: Pacific Bell, Pepsi, and Bean Scene. (The single charge against Jim Blomquist involves changes in a fourth vendor’s rental fee contract which were corrected years ago.)

The donations by the three listed vendors were usually signing-bonuses in nature, not payments, services, leases, etc., and were made with recommendations towards scholarships, College bond measures, and/or the Chancellor’s Discretionary Fund. On those occasions when there was a routing question, and since bonus and other extra vendor-generated funds could be considered not public money per se, such funds were placed in private Foundation accounts while legal opinions were sought as to where the donations should most appropriately be placed. (Where’s the pony?)

During the last three decades, I’ve been a Faculty Representative on various CCSF Foundations including the current one. All have included a Chancellor’s Discretionary Fund; however, in the past, the money came primarily from “unrestricted” areas of scholarship investments. Actually, the encouragement and use of vendor donations seems a much more scholarship/student-friendly way to generate discretionary funds. But the big question, of course, is: May contributions be solicited and used to pass College bonds? The State Chancellor’s General Counsel Office is against doing so because of “appearances,” although it did not forbid the practice, maybe because it is completely legal to fund and run educational campaigns in support of College bonds and issues. (Where’s the pony?)

Although most of the charges against former Chancellor Day and Mr. Herman involve accusations of political misuses of the vendor-generated bonus/extra funding, the fewer charges of misuse of the Chancellor’s Discretionary Fund seem particularly misguided. Many members of the College community have used the Chancellor’s Discretionary Fund over the years. It is supposed to be as flexible as possible. For example, the College has no parking areas for guests; so, sometimes we can reimburse their parking citations through the Fund. For events, fundraisers, receptions that involve food, we’ve been able to use the Chancellor’s Discretionary Fund to reimburse those costs as well. Should the Fund have paid for the Chancellor’s one-year business membership in City Club – an organization where connections through golfing with potential major donors can be made? Well, Willie Brown did point out recently that the most confidentially secure place to negotiate business is on a golf course. Do the Board Members of either the College or the Foundation have rules against such a business membership or against the past practices of flexible uses for discretionary funds? No? (Again: Where’s the pony?)

Some at City College are saying that we should not protest the charges against “The City College Three” because such protests may bring retaliation onto the College and imperil any future bond issues to help CCSF. Obviously, I believe the opposite. Political activity is messy and involves risks and risk-takers. Chancellor Day, a charismatic leader, was a risk-taker, but always for the good of the College and the students. This was an administrator who worked 24/7 for City College and also who, the truth must be told, stepped big time on some big toes!

So: NO PONY [criminal activity] at all, just a perfect storm of some ‘important’ people getting revenge along with others gaining political opportunities and still others selling newspapers. Although the three defendants may have to admit to something if only for a variety of personal, health, and fiscal reasons, all of us—friends and foe alike—know that these men are not, and have never been criminals. Criminal charges should be dropped!

  15. Aaron Lau Says:

I love CCSF because the education that I received gave me confidence to step to the society. I learned the facilities and the buildings improved a lot because of Dr. Day’s vision and hard work with other administrators. However, the charge of criminal crime just doesn’t make sense to me. Please drop the case, and let Dr. Day enjoy a peaceful retirement. I support Dr. Day and endorse this information to support the other administrators involved in the case as well.

  16. William Dunne Says:

I have known Phil Day for 20+ years. I worked with Phil for eight years while he was at Daytona Beach Community College (now Daytona State College). I have known him to be a unique and energetic leader that always had the students best interest at heart. I do not buy for one single moment that he engaged in any way in some process that benefitted him personally rather than the students first, and the institution in general at CCSF. And, based on what I have read I have not seen anything that indicates that Phil Day has benefitted or been enriched in any way personally.

This process smells of politics and media grandstanding as the D.A. is fully engaged in a campaign for Attorney General of CA. The cost of public service is sometimes great, but I know Phil Day to be an upstanding member of our higher education system and not the person that the D.A. seems to be painting to the citizens of S.F. It certainly seems to me that the City of San Francisco would have many more pressing concerns and needs than to be hearing trumped up charges that smell terribly of ones efforts to benefit from political gain. This case will be interesting to follow given the political nature of this situation.

I wish Phil Day all the best, and fully endorse the letter to Friends of City College of San Francisco.

I have been teaching ESL at City College since 1983. Before that I taught in the Chinatown Community with CBO’s helping to provide training for recent immigrants. At that time I felt City College was not connected with it’s community. I saw many chancellors come and go, but Chancellor Day was different… he cared that City College should be a vital part of the community… he inspired staff and instructors to do their best to serve the students and work with each other in a renewed spirit of “can-do-ism.” I believe that the “City College Three” worked for the good of City College and for the good of San Francisco. It is time for politics to be put aside and an honest look at all the facts be done… I totally support our colleagues at this time and hope that all parties can come together to do the right thing. End the politics and resolve what needs to be resolved!

I’ve been with the Community College District as a faculty member for over 25 years, and Dr. Day was one of the finest chancellors we’ve ever had. His dedication to the welfare of our institution, faculty, staff was unquestionable. Through his fine leadership and tireless efforts, much has been accomplished to benefit the school and the community it serves.

I appreciate this opportunity to lend my support for Dr. Day, and fully endorse this letter written by Julia Bergman.

  33. Deborah Levy Says:

    I strongly support this letter.

I have been an Instructor at CCSF since 1995. I feel lucky to have been an employee of the College under Dr. Day – the change in morale and facilities, and therefore in the level of education offered, has been exciting to witness and be a part of.

Jim Blomquist has supervised the construction of some handsome and functional buildings, and we look forward to the coming LEED-certified buildings.

Anyone who has worked even peripherally with these administrators knows that they were and are completely dedicated to the work they do for the College and, primarily, for our students.

D.A. Harris should drop this case immediately.

  47. Annie Wong Says:

    Dear Julia,

Thank you for expressing so eloquently what so many in the CCSF community feel. I endorse wholeheartedly your letter of support. Dr. Day, Stephen Herman, and Jim Blomquist have served City College long, well, and with great dedication. Any mistakes they may have made were just that–mistakes, made in service to the College, and not for personal gain.

I started teaching at CCSF in 1977. Dr. Philip Day is the best chancellor we’ve ever had. What he did for City College is not limited to the many building projects and improvements to the physical plant that he helped make a reality. Because he respected and worked closely with faculty and staff, he rebuilt our morale and a sense of unity. He gave us a common vision and therefore a shared mission. He made us proud to be part of City College.

In addition, as an instructor at the Chinatown-North Beach campus, I am particularly grateful for Dr. Day’s unwavering support in our fight for a new campus.

    September 27, 2009

Below are excerpts of a letter that I sent to Chancellor Day in regards to his retirement from CCSF after serving as our Chancellor for ten years in 2008. These comments sum up my feelings about Dr. Day and his influence on the Institution.

I also feel that two great people that worked for him on his administrative staff are Stephen Herman and Jim Blomquist. Mr. Herman was instrumental in the development of accounting services at CCSF, and was a founding member of The Works of Art Committee at CCSF. He is very precise, accountable and worked with staff, students and instructors in a firm yet understanding manner. He made everyone feel at ease with the budget and accounting process at CCSF. When he talked he meant business yet he had the ability to make all feel as if they were an important part of the process. I met and worked with Mr. Jim Blomquist when the Visual Art building studios were being remodeled in 2000 -2004. He was brought in especially by Dr. Day to expedite and help direct the remodeling and expansion of the campus facility. Mr. Blomquist was the first administrator that I ever worked with that held to the philosophy that if you wanted the design of facilities to work well in the educational community that you should bring the instructors into the loop as equal partners in the design and development process. Mr. Blomquist actually listened to you and made sure that the implementation of design worked for the instructors teaching in the various disciplines that are located on campus. He has done so much in the smooth implementation of the new health center, and gymnasium, the replacement of roads and sidewalks that conform to the students with disabilities act. We should all thank him for his service to the college. I realized then that the people who worked in Dr. Day’s administration represented similar qualities that echoed parts of the macrocosm embodied in Dr. Day’s circumspective personality. He is a great man and educator and I am proud of having the opportunity to have worked with him.

    Sincerely

    Richard G. Rodrigues

Excerpts from a farewell letter to Dr. Day
    February 27, 2008

Dr. Phillip R. Day Jr. Chancellor,

    Dear Dr. Day,

It is with great regret that I send you my apologies for not being able to attend your farewell celebration on Monday. As you may or may not know I too am retiring from full time teaching at CCSF in May of this year. My great disappointment will be that you will not be there to give me my rocking chair.

I can say this because I wish to thank you profusely for all that you have done for me, and CCSF. I have been here for thirty-six years and my tenure goes back to Chancellor Lou Batmale. You are the best chancellor that we have ever had at CCSF, and because of you I can think of myself as a professor. You have taught us all to believe and expand beyond our horizons. You have created a sense of belief in ourselves because you believed in all of us. I do mean the students, staff, administration and instructors. You have enabled us all to work together and I can truly state that you are a “human being”.

You brought humanity back to the office of Chancellor. You treated us all as humans, dropped the punitive demeanor, and asked us all to dream dreams that went beyond the institution and ourselves. There would have been no Diego Rivera Committee web site, traveling exhibition; multi-media exhibit a project that brought Art together with so many other disciplines on campus, working for a common cause. Without your direction there would be no new health center, new gym and the potential for a performing arts center. You brought us together for the last 6 years after 9/11/2001, you told us to speak our minds, be political.

You made me feel that I can call myself a professor rather than an instructor. Thank you for all of that, and the people that you have surrounded yourself with, especially Don Griffin, Peter Goldstein, Bob Gabriner, Stephen Herman, Jim Blomquist and Leslie Smith. City College has undergone a renaissance under your leadership, and lets hope that it does not stop after your departure.

My wife and I will miss your mid-summer newsletter, your addresses to the faculty. We love to hear about your family, your life, your grandchildren…you remind us all that we are human. If only your detractors knew the full impact of what you have meant to us here at CCSF.

Dear Chancellor Day, you will be missed by all of us. You will be closer to your family (closer to your dream), and like me, you are not really retiring. Thanks again for making the last ten years fun and exciting. My hope is that what you have started will continue. That is bringing humanity back to education. Why can’t educators always work together?

Thanks again for helping me get the painting storage facility building in painting. It only took us eighteen years to get. Thanks for putting Don Griffin (also Jim Blomqist) on the project, for without the two of them there would have been no solution. Thank God that Don is going to be the interim Chancellor. I did get to work in our new storage area for two semesters, which made my stay in the painting studio since 1976 a pleasure. The dream did happen; maybe you should come down and see it before you leave. Doesn’t quite compare to the new gym, work out room, swimming pool facility, but it made our program work. Thank you again and again. I bid you a fond fare thee well.

    Sincerely,

    Rick Rodrigues
    A friend in education

  52. Dr Kenneth Walker Says:

I worked as a Chairman and Director for Phil Day at Daytona Beach Community College. One day he called his entire staff to a 7:30 am meeting and I had a feeling that the great surge of energy/progress/Quality our school experienced under Dr Day was about to come to an end. I was right; he wanted to let all of us know there was the possibility he would be taking the job in SF.

Two weeks later I appeared with three other colleagues in our Board Room to be interviewed by three Board members from SF.
They explained what they needed….they needed what we needed when we hired Phil Day…an ethical/hard working man with vision. And they got just that.

I was asked about Phil’s management style and this is a summary of what I said. Phil Day has done everything there is to do in a CC from being a Counselor to a President, and he knows what needs to be done and he has an eye for leadership; he tends to be the opposite of many Presidents in that he does not like a huge administrative staff; he indentifies those who CAN DO and he tends to extend to them enormous trust and authority, and his system WORKS. You can get worked into a pulp by Phil, but it’s exciting, invigorating, and he always gives you credit instead of taking it himself.

I had only known him a few months when one morning he phoned me and said “I discovered at the convention last night that you live right on my way to work…I’ve got some ideas I want to work on in the office and thought maybe I could pick you up and we could go to school and do some fun work.”
This was Sunday morning at 8 AM….I declined but it was so typical of him…he regards public service as a mission in his life and FUN at the same time.

So it was with shock I read that the SF DA has used her authority to prosecute as crimes these minor errors in a major administration …she must have more money and time than the other DAs in the country; and she must, unlike Phil, regard her work as a personal platform rather than a public service.

SF needs to put the appropriate pressure on to have this case settled in a manner that respects the three administrators, the college, the students, and the value of public service.

  53. John Low Says:

As someone who worked with Phil Day for many years in Maryland, I am sure that he is innocent of these charges. Let us all hope that this persecution is soon resolved. John Low

  55. Rosemary Bergin Says:

    Dear Julia,
Thank you so much for organizing this. I wish to add my support for these hardworking men. I have worked for CCSF since 1974 and Dr. Day was the best chancellor I have ever known. He did so many things to improve the college and morale. Charging these men with felonies is unconscionable. Everything they did was to improve the lot of the students, faculty, staff and facilities. I wholeheartedly support this letter.

  56. Stephanie Nuttman-Hoskins Says:

I heard about this situation, I won’t call it a case, 2 years ago when I was a student working for the Associated Students; I read all the original documents I could find. I was on the Planning and Budget Committee where the situation was discussed. It was clear to me that some mistakes were made, but fixed when the awareness of the errors came to light. All over, what, $50,000 dollars, in a 25 million dollar budget.

So thank you to Kamala Harris and again, the San Francisco Chronicle, for pushing some politician’s agenda over an issue which was resolved at the college 3 years ago. And for taking Steven Herman, one of the best student advocates in the college, from us. Which Board of Trustee member are you trying to promote? I hope ruining Dr. Day’s career was worth that political inch.

Kamala Harris can’t convict murderers who admit they did it, but they can work on a mistake made over 2 years ago, a mistake that was corrected. Thank the Creator that Steven and Dr. Day aren’t black men. They would probably be doing 25 to life.

Call Kamala Harris and demand they stop wasting taxpapers’ money on nonsence. Maybe then you won’t get a mistrial in a murder case where the murderers testified they did it.

Blessings to you, Steven, and Dr. Day.

Thank you for the information. I remember reading about the news in the papers. I remember being shocked by the news. Your letter has restored my faith in City College. Indeed, City College has a very important place in the city. I am very grateful for Dr. Day, Mr. Herman, and Mr. Blomquist’s efforts to improve the quality of our education and our school facilities. I strongly support and endorse this letter.

    Christina Nip (student at CCSF)

  63. Alan C. Lee Says:

Thank you Julia for writing this letter and allowing us to voice our collective outrage and disgust on this witch hunt. Please include my name in support of this letter. I wholeheartedly support Dr. Day, Mr. Blomquist and Mr. Herman.

  64. Wendy Yuen Says:

    Dear Julia,

I endorse your letter of support for Dr. Day. As a former CCSF student, I’m inspired by the new Wellness Center and am planning to go back to CCSF to take swimming class. All thanks to Dr. Day’s vision and hard work.

    Wendy Yuen

  65. Lev & Rita Vayngortin Says:

Please, add our names to the list of supporters and Thank you Julia.

    Lev Vayngortin, Math Department

  66. Karan Curtis Says:

Former Chancellor Day, Stephen Herman, and James Blomquist have served the CCSF campus community with good leadership, and have given us a sense of pride in being part of this great institution. They really care about the students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the City of San Francisco. I support and endorse this letter.

  67. Erika Delacorte Says:

Our former Chancellor worked tirelessly for our community and is a true public servant. Our current DA is not. It is she who is misappropriating public funds by pursuing this case.

  68. Attila J. Gabor Says:

It is a travesty what our city’s community college has been put through lately. I am in support and hope that the truth shall set us all free….

    Attila J. Gabor

  69. Nadine Rosenthal Says:

I strongly support Dr. Day, Stephen Herman, and Jim Blomquist. I can’t believe that three amazing individuals who worked so diligently for CCSF were charged by Kamela Harris after two grand juries could not find enough evidence. This matter should have been taken care of in-house. I am absolutely sick about it.

  70. Francisco Morales Says:

I endorse the letter in support of Dr. Day. I’ve been working at City College for 26 years, and I can say that Dr. Day’s administration brought to the College new life and new purpose. Education definitely needs people like him to energize all of us: Students, Faculty, and Staff to work together.
I wish the best to our three administrators.

  71. Irwin Bakin Says:

I am writing in support of Steven Herman whom I have known for many years. I know Steven to act in an ethical manner at all times. I also know that Mr. Herman’s entire adult life has been focused upon education and the improvement of the educational system. He has worked tirelessly in that regard.

I believe that the charges filed against him represent a travesty of justice. It is clear that the charges at best may represent a bureaucratic procedural issue; to impose criminal sanctions in this case would taint the rule of law and mock the entire criminal justice system.

    Irwin Bakin

  72. Carolyn Leeder, RN, BSN,CCM Says:

I have read and support the letter written by Julia Bergman. I have had the pleasure of working with Stephen Herman for the past year and I have only known him to be honest, hardworking and very caring. He exhibits all the qualities which a Community College should cherish ( and according to all the comments above most people do). It is my hope that these charges will be dropped and the “accused” will be able to return to some form of normalacy. It was very kind of you to write the letter and I know that all the supporters feel the same way. Good luck to all.

  73. Joan Bakin Says:

I have known Mr. Herman for many years. His whole life has been dedicated to education. He has always maintained the highest standards in his personal and professional life. I was appalled at the charges made by Ms. Harris against Stephen and his associates. Apparently, going after real criminals is too time consuming when you are trying to claw your way to the top by making splashy headlines, writing books, attending fund raisers and trips to Washington. The journalist, Gwen Ifill has said that Ms. Harris is the “female Barack Obama”. I would say she is more like “Atilla the Hun”.

  74. Louis Schubert Says:

Please add my name to those supporting Phillip Day, Steve Herman, and Jim Blomquist. I endorse this letter and share in the sense of disgust that this unnecessary action by the DA has generated. A heartfelt commitment to the college, its students, and its community is not a crime.

  75. Frank Hoolan Says:

As a friend of Stephen Herman’s for over twenty years, I have come to know him quite well and have seen firsthand the tireless effort with which he has approached his work. I look forward to his vindication in this matter and wholeheartedly endorse the above letter.

  76. Joy Romdalvik Says:

As a retired Civil Servant for the State of New York’s Parole System and someone who has known Stephen Herman all of his life, I would like to say that I have always known Mr. Herman to be an honest and caring person, as well as a dedicated educator. Please add my name in support of Mr. Herman.

  77. Tien Rita Wang Says:

I would like to add my voice to the support for Dr. Philip Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. These three have worked hard to meet the needs of the our students and the needs of the of our various San Francisco communities, especially minority and immigrant communities. The buildings they have built and the programs they have maintained and continued are vital to our city’s cultural and economic well-being. Harris’ self-serving pettifoggery is shameful, her motives appear to be disgraceful, and even base, and a serious disservice is being performed in the name of the people of San Francisco. We citizens and residents of San Francisco owe these three a debt of thanks, not the shameful pettifoggery being brought against them.

    Tien Rita Wang
    Instructor, Foreign Languages
    City College of San Francisco

  78. Robert Lipp Says:

I have known Stephen Herman for many years as a hard working and honest individual. I was saddened to learn that he was charged along with two others by San Francisco’s District Attorney. Knowing Stephen as I do, I can only conclude that “no good deed goes unpunished” and that the charges are a supreme waste of taxpayer dollars.

  79. Maya Novelli Says:

Yes, add my name to the letter. The only crime here is on the part of the DA’s office. For whatever reason, the financial consequences to CCSF, and San Francisco taxpayers brought on by this case will deplete seriously limited funds. With no less than two bond funded projects currently in progress, (Joint Use Facility and Chinatown/North Beach Campus) the forced administrative leave of James Blomquist, (the project manager), will require the district to hire temporary replacement project managers at GREAT expense. Ridiculous! How many jobs will be lost, how many classes will have to be canceled so the Bay Guardian and the San Francisco Chronicle can sell a few papers and the DA can look like a muckraker.
    Shame on them all,

  80. Susan L. Roth Says:

    Dear Julia,

AMEN! I completely support your letter and would like to add my support to these fine men and to your fine institution.

    Susan L. Roth

  81. Bill Goodyear Says:

I concur fully with the supportive sentiments listed in the many responses to Julia Bergman’s letter.

These three excellent administrators changed City College in many positive ways through their dedication and tireless efforts. They should be honored and praised, not vilified by a politically-motivated District Attorney.

I add my support to the hope that the charges will be dropped and that all three will be vindicated.

  82. Catherine Chung Says:

I fully support and endorse this letter, Dr. Philip R. Jay, Jr., Jim Blomquist and Stephen Herman.

ESL Instructor at Chinatown/North Beach Campus

  83. Sunny Clark Says:

Please include me among the supporters for Dr. Day, Mr. Blomquist, and Mr. Herman. To my knowledge, after having worked with these hard-working, dedicated men for many years, I have not known them to do anything for personal gain. Without Dr. Day and Mr. Blomquist, the transformation of the nearly 80 year-old buildings on the Ocean Avenue campus would not have happened. These men spearheaded the building of the new Student Health Center, to replace the 33 year-old leaky, temporary bungalows, and the building of the new Health & Wellness Center, to replace the earthquake unsafe gyms. These men have tirelessly dedicated themselves to City College students and employees. They made it possible for future projects, such as the Joint Use Classroom building, the Performing Arts Center, and the Chinatown North Beach Campus to be realized, providing education to the underserved.

Many questions are raised by my voting friends and colleagues. One particularly troublesome issue is that in these devastating economic times, when we are told that our City does not have money to fight real crime, is it a good use of public funds to drag these hard working, productive citizens, who have dedicated their professional lives to champion underserved citizens, through these proceedings? Who really benefits, and who really is behind these shortsighted moves?

  84. Keith McAllister Says:

    Dear Julia,
I would be proud to have my name added to your fine letter. The appropriate action for the City of San Francisco would be to set aside a special day to honor and thank Dr. Day, Mr. Blomquist, and Mr. Herman for the extraordinary service they have given to City College and its students. The appropriate action for Ms. Harris would be to hang her head and slink away in deep shame.
    Keith McAllister

  85. Mycuc Khuu Says:

    Hi Julia,

I support and endorse this letter for Dr. Day, James Blomquist and Stephen Herman. Thank you.

  86. Brian Lym Says:

As a former CCSF librarian, faculty member and San Franciscan (now residing in New York City), I strongly support this letter. During my time at CCSF, I witnessed these administrators’ excellent management and stewardship of the college.

  87. Carlota Babilon Says:

It is a sad day for the City of San Francisco when its name is embroiled in a witchhunt of three of the finest people to have served our college and community. The ingratitude and insult shown to Dr. Day and colleagues is a great sorrow and embarrassment to those of us who have worked at CCSF over two decades, have served under several chancellors and are qualified to judge the enormous progress achieved under Dr. Day’s stewardship. Dr. Day not only contributed to the physical development of the college at large but, along the way, inspired students, faculty and staff and boosted overall morale. Our college community should erect a monument to Dr. Day and the City of San Francisco should extend to these heroes and immediate and humble apology.

  88. Daniel Curzon-Brown Says:

Kamala Harris sealed her own fate with this ridiculous felony charge. If she is this inept at DA, she should definitely hold no higher office. In fact, she
should indict herself, for her financial “crimes” were the equal of anything that happened at CCSF. If the people signing this letter are any measure, Ms. Harris had better fear for her political life. Why would anyone try to improve City College when opportunistic politicians will use them for their own gain? Much ado about bookkeeping! –Daniel Curzon-Brown, retired English instructor

  89. Daved Tejada Says:

For more than four years, I have dealt directly with both Dr. Philip R.
Day, Jr., and James Blomquist over different issues.
My opinion of both of these men is extremely positive.
As a close neighbor of the campus, lots of the happenings at the college affect my every day life. Over the last four years there were different issues that meant I had discussions with both Jim and Philip.
Even if we didn’t always agree, both men listened and treated me with
    respect.

Even if Jim and Philip may have done some action that was technically
illegal, it was not done for personal financial gain.

As a long time San Franciscan, I was ashamed to hear the way that our city attorney was handling this situation. Why were they required to post bail? Has the city attorney not heard of personal recognizance?
How insulting to these two gentlemen of such impeccable stature and long time devotion to education.

Obviously someone has personal issues and is wasting our time, energy, and money on it.

    Quickly resolve these issues.

    Sincerely;
    David L. Tejeda

  90. Thomas L. Giusto Says:

I have been an instructor at City College of San Francisco for the past 32 years and in that time have seen Chancellors come and go; Dr. Day was the first Chancellor that truly cared about the school and the students. While working in the Physical Education Department, I would see Chancellor Day every morning in the Fitness Center. I would arrive at 4:30am so I could get my workout in before opening the Center at 6 am. There would be Dr. Day, working out, getting himself ready for the rigorous schedule he had every day. I came to know Dr. Day personally and I have never met a man more determined to turn City College into a first rate institution of learning. Dr. Day’s honesty and integrity should NEVER come into question, this attempt by Kamala Harris is a slap in the face of Dr. Day, his administration, and faculty. I hope we can get this attention-getting problem solved.

  91. Debby Murphy Says:

I support this letter as Dr. Day, supported City College of San Francisco.

  92. Kate Connell, CCSF Librarian Says:

I also strongly endorse this letter of support

  93. James Torlakson Says:

I have read, considered, and fully support this letter.

  94. Marylou Massey-Henderson Says:

    Julia,
I fully support this letter. These administrators worked tirelessly and effectively to improve CCSF and to benefit students.
    Thank you for this letter.
Also, a thank you to Dr. Day, Steve Herman and Jim Blomquist for their many contributions.

  95. E. Monique Comacchio Says:

It would be criminal to condemn these administrators for a corrected mistake which was only meant to help the school and the citizens of San Francisco. The work and commitment of Dr. Day was felt by all who worked at CCSF over the 10 years he served as Chancellor. And the accomplishments he, and his administrators made, can easily be seen by all who visit the school today.

Thank you, Julia Bergman, for providing this opportunity to support these individuals, who supported all of us for so many years.

    Monique Comacchio

  96. Helen Slater Says:

I read about this so-called corruption trial with utter disgust. What blatant opportunism by DA Kamala Harris.

Where is the crime Ms. Harris? Your ludicrous waste of taxpayer money should disqualify you for any future positions in government. These men committed no crime and experienced no personal gain. They worked tirelessly for City College and this is the thanks they get.

    Helen Slater
    Outraged Citizen

  97. Tim Wolfred Says:

I wholeheartedly endorse the sentiments expressed by Julia Bergman. Phil Day, Steven Herman and James Blomquist have been tireless in working to build City College’s ability to serve its students. They have been selfless in their efforts and have achieved much. For them to be charged with felonies is wrong.
    Tim Wolfred
    Former Member
    Board of Trustees

  98. Andrew Chandler Says:

I fully support the contents of this letter, its spirit and intent.

  99. Patricia Arack Says:

It is an absolute outrage that our dedicated former Chancellor Dr. Day and two administrators have been charged for wrong-doing. The wrong-doing is on the head of Kamala Harris who is running for Attorney General for the state and wants to make headlines to show that she is tough on “corruption.” She should get tough on the perpetrators of homicides, not on hard-working public servants. SF has one of the lowest conviction-rates for murder in the country under her leadership. She should be ashamed. Dr. Day and his staff have made City College a 21st Century place to teach and learn. They should be thanked not condemned. Harris has hurt our reputation in a very cruel way.

  100. Janet Tom Says:

I support and endorse Julia Bergman’s letter in support of Dr. Day.

  101. Lynn Yagle-Snead Says:

I strongly support Dr Day and his work with the college for ten years. Dr. Day is fair, informed and well meaning. His hard work to bring bond funds to the College is appreciated by all and brings educational opportunity to all San Franciscans especially low income, eldelry, and immigrant students. Dr Day helped me personally with problems I had with the College and acted in a fair and supportive way. He has always been honest and fair. I am sure his activities have been apologized for and we should move on.

    Sincerely, Lynn Yagle-Snead

  102. Nancy Tay Says:

    Hi Julia,

Thank you so much for your wonderful letter. That really touched my heart. Without
Dr. Day, Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist, these three great hard working
administrators’ contributions and dedication, City College won’t grow that fast
    and move to 21 century.

I pray that this case is dropped soon.

  103. Kimberly Ginther-Webster Says:

I completely support and endorse this letter. Thank you for writing it.

    Kimberly Ginther-Webster
    Librarian, CCSF

  104. Judy Seto Says:

I wholeheartedly support your letter. They are hard working individuals and have done a tremendous job for CCSF. Their contributions and dedication to the college and students are greatly respected.

  105. Patty Chong-Delon Says:

Wow! I can’t believe this is happening to people whose contributions are felt now and will continue to benefit San Franciscans and others who continue their growth and learning at City College of San Francisco. I fully support and endorse the thoughtful letter by Julia Bergman.

  106. Carol Reed Says:

I give my support to Stephen Herman. After all of his years of service to City College of San Francisco
he deserves it. He is a wonderful person, and my opinion of him has not changed through this ordeal.

  107. Erin Cunningham Says:

I fully endorse this letter. Look at the big picture and you will realize how much these three men have greatly contributed to the positive legacy of CCSF.
    Erin Cunningham–CCSF Faculty

  108. Lindy McKnight Says:

I fully support these three outstanding individuals dedicated to the education of all San Franciscans as well as our surrounding communities. Dr. Day provided exceptional leadership day in and day out and accomplished more than most people will ever comprehend. He leaves behind a legacy San Francisco can be proud of and will benefit from for decades to come. Without Jim Blomquist’s construction and project management expertise, the beautiful new buildings that SF voters paid for through their generous support of the City College bonds would not tower as magnificently as they do. Stephen Herman I met in 1982. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Castro Valencia campus and is a man of great integrity, professionalism, community activism and advocacy. It saddens me greatly that in his last year–after decades of dedicated public service–he must endure the injustice being driven by one individual’s political ambition and desire for press and publicity.
    Lindy McKnight–CCSF

  109. Debra M. Giusto Says:

Dr. Day, Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist have made City College of San Francisco a better place for students! Isn’t that what it’s about, “The student’s”!

I support and endorse this letter.
    Thank you Julia!

  110. Chris Coghlan Says:

In the years I served as President of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association I had many dealings with Dr. Day and Jim Blomquist.
They were always very helpful and showed great support for the needs of our community. Whenever there was any issue that would affect our neighborhood they were always open to meet and work out a satisfactory agreement that would serve all of our needs.

Our community owes them many thanks for their years of commitment to the betterment of CCSF and the Sunnyside.

  111. Jane H. Stein Says:

I endorse Ms. Bergman’s letter 100%. I am outraged by these trumped up charges being brought against three men who have devoted their lifetimes to the field of higher education and to improve the lives of so many people. I am also aware that Ms. Harris has higher political aspirations regarding running for CA Attorney General and I strongly believe she is using this bogus case against three innocent people as her step up the political ladder. Perhaps she is trying to become a part of President Obama’s administration and gain an appointment to work with Eric Holder in the Dept of Justice as well. She is continually seeking the limelight regardless of the cost. While I do not know Dr. Day or Mr. Blomquist personally, I have known Mr. Herman well for many years and I can personally vouch for his complete devotion to the field of education and he has achieved much success in all of his endeavors. These charges should and need to be dropped immediately as they have already negatively impacted the lives and careers of three innocent men. Additionally the court costs of this trial is a waste of taxpayer’s money as the City of San Francisco cannot afford needless litigation. We also cannot forget the additional and costly expenses to these three men for having to pay for their respective legal teams. Stop this wasteful and unnecessary prosecution now!

  112. Peggy Guichard Says:

Julia: Thank you for providing this opportunity to support Dr Day, Stephen Herman and Jim Blomquist during this distressing and difficult time for them. Stephen, in particular, has been a key administrator in the processing of the clinical contracts essential to maintain externship
sites for HCT students. I appreciate all these dedicated administrators have done for the CCSF community and hope for a positive and speedy resolution to this issue.
    Peggy Guichard, Chair
    Health Care Technology

  113. Tom Blair Says:

I fully support Ms. Bergman’s letter.

Dr. Day, Mr. Blomquist and Mr. Herman were hard-working City College employees who have done much for the College and may have been caught up in a bureaucratic snafu. Two grand juries determined that their actions were not chargeable. In fact without the hard work of these three men, the campus would still look like the dump where I first began teaching aover thirty years ago. They have been important in rebuilding the morale of the campus.

Compare this to the actions of a publicity-greedy District Attorney who will do anything to get herself on the front page and on TV. This is the same District Attorney who submitted application for prosecuting “border-related” cases to the federal government and fraudently obtaining over $5 million which she later had to return. Even in her ineptitude she knows San Francisco is over 450 miles from any border. Not a penny of public funds was lost or went into personal pockets in the City College matter. Yet, the frontpage greedy Ms. Harris has the nerve to charge these people. Shame on her!

  114. Ray del Portillo Says:

I have worked with all the staff members of the Community College as a member of the Prop A Community College Membership, as a representative from the Dept of Adult and Aging Services. I was impressed by their openness and commitment to making proper use of the money that was available for the building. Overall, there was openness and clarity on the use of all the funds available, and Dr. Day was always present to see the money was properly used and open to the Prop A endeavor. Whatever incidental placement of the money, there was never a question of how it was going to be utilized in the best interests of, and as intended by, the Committee. Please feel free to contact me if you should have further questions on the handling of these funds. Thank you.

  115. Leslie Morales Says:

I am in total support of your letter. These individuals have long-standing records of accomplishment with CCSF and are well-respected. Count me in!

  116. Michelle Lee Says:

I support your letter and Dr. Day, James Blomquist and Stephen Herman.

  117. Angele Pastore Says:

For decades, CCSF was a badly neglected campus. Finally, a change arrived: Dr. Phillip Day. With his brilliance, vision, passion, energy, and committment, he took an almost medieval institution and built the citizens of San Francisco a bridge to the future. In turn, the District Attorney of the “city that Knows How” is building Dr. Day, Stephen Herman, and James Blomquist a bridge to hell. Their crime? To have truly cared for CCSF and to have gone the extra mile to build desperately needed facilities. I thank them for their tremendous legacy, and I am proud to stand with those seeking to put an end to this disgraceful prosecution.

  118. Lynda Cornejo Says:

    Dear Julia,

Please add my name to the overwhelming majority of CCSF faculty who support our former Chancellor, Dr. Day. He was without a doubt the best chancellor our college has ever had. Unlike most of his predecessors, Dr. Day did not use his position as a stepping stone to further his political carreer, but worked tirelessly and effectively to improve CCSF.

I am outraged and appalled that he has been targeted in this way.

Again, I most grateful for your efforts on his behalf.

  120. Tomi Cunningham Says:

  121. Lenny Carlson Says:

    Dear Julia,

Please add my name to the growing list of supporters of Dr. Day, Steven Herman and Jim Blomquist. Thank you for articulating some of the very important things done at CCSF under the leadership of Dr. Day. I am gratified that so many of my friends and colleagues feel as strongly about the situation as I do.

As a music instructor at CCSF since 1997, I deal every day with the issues facing our incredibly diverse student body. While many may use the college as a stepping stone to higher educational goals, it is also the last realistic chance for a growing at-risk population of returning vets, homeless and others in great need of our classes and support services.

Our city, our state, our nation and the whole world are barely avoiding economic and social collapse, as if dancing frantically on a tightrope with a receding safety net. It is amazing and very disheartening to me that anyone, least of all a “rising star,” would pick on CCSF for political gain at such a perilous time in our history.

I hope that this crisis ends soon, and with it the atmosphere of paranoia. That would allow us to get back to our real work: directly serving the needs of 1 in every 7 citizens of this beautiful and cultured city.

  122. Marian Lam Says:

With utmost respect for Dr. Day, James Blomquist and Stephen Herman, I wholeheartedly support this letter.

    Marian Lam

  123. Eric Brainard Says:

I support this letter as well as Stephen Herman, James Blomquist and Dr. Philip Day. Tough decisions at critical times call for courage and determination to see projects through sometimes resulting in sacrifice and compromise. I firmly believe that these three men acted with good intentions and the outcome of all their efforts is only briefly described in this letter. Getting tasks accomplished is extremely difficult and full of roadblocks and potholes. Just try to manage any large scale project and see for yourself how quickly things change and just getting it done becomes a necessity because people are depending on you to see it through no matter what. No one likes a quitter. (CCSF Purchaser)

  124. Bob Siegel Says:

Chancellor Day, during his tenure at City College, was as fine an administrator as this institution has ever had. The positive impact he had upon the physical facilities will be profoundly felt by students and faculty for decades to come. Because of the contribution Chancellor Day made in this, and other, areas, CCSF rose to become one of the finest community colleges in the United States.

I wholeheartedly endorse the letter supporting Steve Herman, Jim Blomquist, and Phil Day, administrators who worked tirelessly and unselfishly in the best interests of the institution they so honorably served.

    Bob Siegel
    Retired Instructor

  125. Linda Olivenbaum Says:

    Dear Julia,

Please add my voice to yours and so many others in defense of Dr. Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. They are dedicated administrators whose efforts have benefited countless students, faculty and staff. Charges against them should be dropped.

    Linda Olivenbaum

  126. Marcia DuBois Says:

I endorse this letter in support of Dr. Day, Steve Herman, and Jim Blomquist. Dr. Day was an inspiring leader at CCSF. He brought us together as a communnity, improving morale exponentially. He and the others don’t deserve this attack, but our gratitude for their leadership.

  127. Leslie Smith Says:

I strongly support this letter. Our colleagues worked long and hard to get the best for our students and our college.
    Leslie Smith

  128. Sandy Sadler Says:

I support and endorse this letter.

  129. Barbara Hockman, retired instructor Says:

I wholeheartedly support and endorse this letter. As chancellor, Dr. Day brought and encouraged unparalleled benefits to City College, to its staff, to its students, and to its instructional programs. As a logical and practical result, he also benefited the San Francisco community (and Bay area) as a whole. The infractions and errors under consideration are trivial compared with these vast benefits.

  130. Rose Marie Roberson Says:

I support and endorse this letter. Thank you Julia for coordinating this effort.

  131. Wendy Owens Says:

I support and endorse your letter defending Dr. Day.

  132. Darrel Hess Says:

Please add my signature to this letter. Dr. Day helped lead City College into a period of rebuilding and unity. The wide support he is receiving from staff, faculty, department chairs, administrators, and unions indicates how much he strengthened this institution–to the benefit all people in San Francisco.

  133. Sheryl Blumenthal Says:

I fully and unequivocally support this letter.

  134. Carmen R. Roman-Murray Says:

I strongly support Dr. Day for the magnificent job he did at City College of San Francisco. Not only did he bring our school’s facilities into the the 21st century, but he changed the culture at CCSF, and we are a much better institution for it.

    Carmen R. Roman-Murray

  135. Jack Sparks Says:

Dr. Day & I began on the same August morning in 1998 on the occasion of a contentious strike which found us both locked out of Conlan Hall, the doors to which were chained. Under Dr. Day’s leadership, the relationship between faculty & Administration improved tremendously over the next ten years, thanks in large part to his efforts.
In addition, we are all now witness to wonderful changes to the physical plant on almost all campuses, new facilities that enable & will enable us to serve the students in our communities better, more effectively.
These positive changes offer testament to what was the first priority in every decision Dr. Day made and in every action he took: the success of our students and faculty and a commitment to making CCSF an even more vital part of this great city. I wholeheartedly offer him and the other Administrators my support and endorse the letter to Friends of CCSF.

  136. Jacquelene Wesley Says:

Because I benefit through instructing students in the gorgeous Wellness Center on Ocean Campus, I stand in support of Dr. Day and anyone who has helped in the education process. Learning and achieving new skills at the community college works best in clean and comfortable environments. I believe that is what the administrators worked diligently to secure in order to bring about student success.

    Peace and Wellness!

  137. David E. Blood Says:

As someone who moved from the North Gym into the new Health and Wellness Center, I know first hand the work done by Chancellor Day. I also had the priviledge of working directly with James Blomquist on the dance facilities. We need him back working on the many projects not yet completed.
    David E. Blood
    Dance Coordinator
    CCSF

  138. Steven Spurling Says:

I have been in the community college system for over 30 years. Dr. Day was one of the best leaders I have had the pleasure to work with. It is a travesty to blow way out of proportion the actions with which he is alleged to have committed.

  139. Joanne Low Says:

Thank you for initiating a letter of support for Dr. Philip R. Day, James Blomquist, and Stephen Herman. They have dedicated many years of service to improving the educational environment at City College of San Francisco for current students and the generations of future students.

  140. Jeff Weston Says:

I fully support this letter. Thank you Dr. Day. I am very grateful for your service to the college. Your spirit of cooperation is inspiring.

    Jeff Weston
    Photography Instructor
    City College of San Francisco

  141. Carl Jew Says:

I endorse the letter of support and join my colleagues in defending the integrity of Dr. Philip Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist, and honoring their achievements at the college.

  142. George Shardlow Says:

I fully endorse the letter. During my many years as Behavioral Sciences Department Chair I found all three of these men to be very hard working individuals who did all that they could to further the best interests of our students and our faculty.

    George Shardlow
    Psychology Instructor, and former
    Behavioral Sciences Department Chair

  143. Linda Squires Grohe Says:

    Dear Julia,

Thank you for writing such an excellent letter on behalf of Dr. Philip Day, Stephen Herman and Jim Blomquist. These three men have worked tirelessly over the years to make City College of San Francisco the wonderful institution that it is today. The people who have gained from their efforts are the students, staff, faculty and administrators of the College.

    Linda Squires Grohe
    Dean

  144. Venette Cook Says:

    Dear Julia,

I also endorse your letter. Dr. Day was inspirational to me, and clearly many of us, in a world often so sadly cynical and uninspiring. I also encourage Ms. Harris to immediately re-direct her energies and publicly funded time at true crime. What a misguided waste!

    Venette Cook
    ESL Faculty

  145. Rebeca Mauleon Says:

As a faculty member of the City College Music Department for the past 11 years as well as an alumna, I have seen the College withstand many challenges. It is my hope that City College will rise above the ridiculous allegations being brought forth. I lend my full support to the College, staff, faculty and alumni, and urge our political leaders to focus on the urgent matters facing our fair City and cease attempting to gain political clout at the expense of our school.

  146. lillian McDaniel Says:

    I support this letter!
    Lillian McDaniel

  147. Brenda Evans Says:

As a nurse practitioner @ the new CCSF Student Health Center, I strongly support the letter in support of Dr. Day. Each deparment on campus has benefited from Dr. Day’s relentless hard work as Chancellor.

  148. Ronald Bixler Says:

Please include me among the supporters of Dr. Day, Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist. That they have had to face such unjust charges speaks far more about the character of Kamala Harris than any mistakes these individuals may have made. To prosecute Philip Day and the others on such charges, far beyond any rational interpretation of their actions, is a travesty. A felon is by definition an evil-doer. None of these men did anything but put the interest of the public institution they served first. They did nothing for personal gain. The charges should be dropped.

  149. Jerry W. Lum Says:

Please include my name in support of Dr. Philip Day, Mr. James Blomquist, and Mr. Stephen Herman. Their positive, constructive, and unselfish activism has promoted this College, the success of our students, and the morale of our community to heights never seen before during my long tenure here. What they have accomplished in terms of strategic planning, facility improvement, effective policies, and academic excellence are truly notable. In addition, all of this was accomplished with only good intent, which included the well-being of the tax payers of San Francisco who are regarded as an essential part of this community. Especially during my tenure as the Architecture Department Chair, I have had many opportunities to engage Dr. Day and have the highest respect and appreciation for his stellar professionalism and accomplishments at all levels. We continue to build upon his legacy to further the successes of our students in spite of the challenges we face during this severe economic downturn.

    Sincerely,
    Jerry W. Lum, Architect
    CCSF Architecture Department
    Dept. Chair 1998-2003

  150. Linda Gillette Says:

I wholeheartedly support Dr. Day, Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist and feel saddened by Kamala Harris’ attempt to ruin their reputations. After working for 30 years at City College I know that Dr. Day is the best person we have ever had to work hard for City College’s students, faculty and staff.

  151. Judy Hubbell Says:

Thank you, Julia. I support your letter. In speaking with many people in the college community, I do not know anyone who feels that these administrators were out for their own personal gain. Their focus was only to benefit the college and its students, and not themselves. Didn’t they work tirelessly to dream of a better day for City College of San Francisco? Is that wrong? One has only to look around campus, marvel at the new Wellness Center, and see the building going on to recognize the vision of Dr. Day, the tireless work of James Blomquist and Steve Herman both here and in the community at large. We see their vision in action, as we avoid the construction and temporary chaos. Yes, it is a mess, but it is finally happening! We are all angry at Ms. Harris, and confused by the media circus around this. Does she, and do the reporters at the SF Chronicle, see how much we need these changes? Do they know how desperately our buildings have needed replacement? Some were falling down, with pianos being stored in bungalows with holes in the roof! Finally we hope to look forward to the building of a Performing Arts Center that will allow us to have more than 5 leaky practice rooms for our thousands of serious music students! Hopefully Kamala Harris does not kill this dream. Thank you, Julia, and thank you Dr. Day. We are with you. Money raised to support the propositions for this rebuilding of our campus was nothing but a noble cause.

    Judy Hubbell, CCSF Music Faculty

  152. Rita Moran Says:

    I strongly support the letter.

  153. Charles Metzler Says:

We need Hallinan back as Harris is a reactionary and does not have intellectual health. Lets get rid of her.
Mr. Blomquist has managed to keep the funds out of boondogles and has done the best job possible.

  154. Andrea Niosi Says:

Julia, Thank you for writing this letter. I am in support of Dr. Day. After many years of asking for new carpet to replace the 1960’s orange carpet in the StatlerLibrary, Dr. Day personally saw to it.

    Andrea Niosi
    CCSF Librarian

  155. James Borrazas Says:

I strongly support the letter sent by Julia and the others. Please add my name to the signatures.

  156. Li Miao Lovett Says:

I am wholeheartedly in support of the City College administrators, whose work on behalf of the students has only reflected their commitment to diversity and access to higher education for all.

    Li Miao Lovett

  157. Carol Heard Says:

Please add my name to the list of supporters.

  158. Chirstopher J stellman Says:

While one may question a few of the decisions made by Dr. Day and administrators in this case, there is no question to their loyalty and dedication to City Cillege.
It saddens me to think that all this may be overblown in order to aid an opportunistic candiidate for higher office.
    Christopher Stellman
    CAHS Department

  159. Phil Paulsen Says:

I’m honored to join my friends and former colleagues in support of Dr. Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. The scope and lasting significance of Dr. Day’s contributions and dedication to the college were without equal.

  160. Barbara Haimes Says:

Please add my name in support of these men who have worked tirelessly on behalf of CCSF.

    Barbara Haimes

    CCSF-Culinary Arts & Hospitality Studies

  161. Gregory Johnson Says:

I am happy to add my name to this letter of support and feel the DA’s office is making a giant mistake in these allegations!

  162. Jo Ann Hendricks Says:

Chancellor Day was one of the top chancellors of all time, working diligently and long hours, looking after the welfare of the college and many staff and faculty individually. He quietly went about his business of handling some of the most serious problems the institution has ever faced, all the while looking to the future. The current attack on Chancellor Day and other staff is one-sided and unfair, both to the individuals being attacked and to the institution as a whole. There has been no balance to the story, only the promotion of a political agenda by one politician who seeks to be the state attorney general. Instead, the truth of the allegations should be made public; if so, the outcome will show that the three accused are innocent of all charges.

  163. Leo Paz Says:

These administrators were effective and exemplary leaders and they exerted all efforts for CCSF. Please include my name in the list of supporters. Dr. Philip Day, Jr. led CCSF as an excellent leader for a decade.

  164. Lori Cabansag Says:

Dr. Day did so much for our college in the ten years he was Chancellor. I stand in support of him, as well as James Blomquist and Stephen Herman. I fully endorse Julia Bergman’s letter.

  165. R. Wood Massi & Larry Brinkin Says:

We support Stephan Herman and Philip Day.

  166. R. Wood Massi & Larry Brinkin Says:

Stephen Herman has worked tirelessly for City College and the community for many years. We support your efforts to have these damaging charges against him and Philip Day dropped.

    R. Wood Massi,
    Chairperson (Retired)
    Older Adults Department
    & Larry Brinkin

  167. Sandra Vaughn Says:

Thanks for writing this letter Julia. I also want to add my support for Dr. Day and the other 2 administrators.

  168. David Parr Says:

Chancellor Day has been a unique and welcome presence at City College. This attempt to besmirch his reputation smacks of political opportunism. I heartily endorse this letter.

    David Parr

  169. Karyn Beyer Says:

Thank you, Julia, for your efforts in uniting all of us in support of these three administrators. The DA’s charges are nothing more than an attempt at grandstanding for personal gain, at the expense of the taxpayers and the livelihood and reputation of three individuals who devoted themselves to City College. I wholeheartedly support your letter, and hope efforts like this will expose this farce for what it is. Day, Blomquist and Herman devoted themselves to the betterment of our institution and their contributions should be celebrated, not publicly and erroneously vilified.

  170. Denise Quinn Says:

I strongly endorse this letter of support for Dr. Day, Mr. Herman and Mr. Bloomquist. These charges do not reflect the character of these individuals nor the ethical decisions these administers have made for the success of the students, faculty and staff at CCSF. I have never questioned the integrity of former Chancellor Day and am grateful he dedicated ten constructive and successful years to City College. Thank you for writing the letter Julia.

My heartfelt support for this letter.
    Sally Winn

  174. Steven Raskin Says:

I fully endorse this letter of support for Dr. Day. Under his leadership CCSF grew both in its service to the community and the cooperative spirit between faculty and administration. Errors in judgement that were made in service to noble goals have been remedied, and the motivation for prosecutorial pursuit is transparently political. The DA’s targeting of these three public servants in a low-risk/high-profile case is shameful.

    Steven Raskin
    Chair, Photography Department

  175. Bill Shields Says:

There are real criminals out there who need the District Attorney’s attention. I urge her to drop these trumped up charges against people who have served the students, the college and the city very well.

  176. Edward Stering Says:

I fully support this letter. Chancellor Day accomplished so much and extended educational opportunity to all students! I trust that the other administrators were essential support in the continuing successes of CCSF, also.

  177. AFT 2121, CCSF Faculty Union Says:

    Dear Julia,
The Delegate Assembly passed a resolution at its meeting today, August25, to officially endorse your letter of support for Dr. Phil Day and administrators Steve Herman and Jim Blomquist. AFT will send a message through our CCSF faculty listserve to all faculty that includes your fine letter and the link to this site.

  178. Angie Webster Says:

Please add me to the list of supporters. Thanks for your thoughtful and rational letter.

  183. Dana Kwan Says:

    Dear Julia,

I endorse your Letter of Support and wholeheartedly support Dr. Day. I’m very grateful for the legacy that he left City College of San Francisco. Thank you for speaking up!

    Dana Kwan

  184. Gregory Keech Says:

    Julia,

Thank you so much for your letter. I support it wholeheartedly. It would be a shame if Dr. Day’s concrete legacy of contruction and improvements to our facilities were marred by what appears to be political gamesmanship. If Ms. Harris is seeking to use this case to further her aspirations to state office, I think she is sadly mistaken.

Mistakes may have been made by these City College administrators, but they were mistakes made in service to the college and its students, as far as I can ascertain. The reaction of the District Attorney’s office seems excessive.

    Gregory Keech
Chair, Department of English as a Second Language

  185. Karl Gamarra Says:

I am in support of this letter that expresses the outrageous charges being
brought against these City College administrators.

    Karl Gamarra

  186. Charles Belbin Says:

Much thanks, Julia. I fully endorse your letter of support for Dr. Philip Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. As a teacher who has worked for the new building for the Chinatown campus, I know how much the buildings and projects the CCSF 3 have worked for are needed and mean to students, teachers and the community. I know people who have worked for 25 and 30 years to get the new buildings for the Mission and Chinatown campuses. Day, Herman and Blomquist did good work that needed being done. For those of us who know how much this work needed being done–dilapidated physical plants and inadequate equipment–the work of these three for the good of the college and the working communities we serve is exemplary. They may have gotten their hands dirty with honest mistakes through honest toil because they rolled up sleeves to get the job done. The work done speaks eloquently for itself and in their defense for honest effort.
In bringing this case without a grand jury recommendation I think shows very questionable judgment on Harris’s part and brings up questions of her character. Indeed, one wonders just what she thinks justice is. Courts are separated from the more political branches of our government for a reason. Does Harris understand those reasons? Does Harris understand what education and community colleges mean to the community, especially minority communities? It doesn’t seem she does.

  187. Helen Dilworth Says:

Thank you, Julia, for initiating this important campaign to clear the names of our dedicated administrators, Steven Herman, Dr.Phillip Day, and Jim Blomquist! You have my support. These honest and hardworking enthusiasts seem to have made an “honest mistake” (without criminal intent or personal financial gain), in efforts to transform our well worn campuses into places befitting Time magazine’s recognition of CCSF as the eleventh best community college in America, and our grand twent-first century plans for innovative programs such as stem cell research.
Since the money in the “wrong” fund had quickly been transferred to the “correct” fund, and two grand juries acquitted the CCSF Three, why did the DA squander time and money when there were serious issues to fix inside and outside of her office?

  188. Daniel Fawcett Says:

As a former CCSF student and co-worker of Julia Bergman, anybody’s back she’s got I’ve got too.

I strongly support Dr. Day in this effort.

    Daniel Fawcett

  189. Charles Carroll, Ed.D. Says:

Having known Dr. Day for almost 20 years, I can say that he is an outstanding and visionary educator. There is no doubt in my mind that his efforts at CCSF were for the good of the institution. It is unfortunate that his efforts have been labeled as they have been. I pray that he will be able to overcome this obstacle and once again make contributions to the education and well-being of our citizens.

Dr. Philip Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist are the most hardworking, committed and devoted City College of San Francisco employees I have ever met. Individually and collectively, they accomplished so much for City College of San Francisco, the students and the community. The mistake committed was purely administrative not warranting criminal prosecution. Assessing them fines, just like everybody else who made similar campaign financial mistakes will be more than sufficient.

I urge the District Attorney to treat the mistakes as nothing more than simple campaign finance error and stop prosecution of these good people who meant no harm except do their best for City College of San Francisco. Their only real mistake was perhaps their over zealous desire to serve the students of City College and build facilities desperately needed by the students.

    Regards,

    Myrna Lim
    Member, California Democratic Party

  195. Sarah Thompson Says:

This investigation has been a needless waste of tax payers dollars and a tremendous blow to City College of San Francisco. The three administrators under investigation are some of CCSF’s finest and have made countless, selfless contributions to the college. Ms. Harris needs to re-order her priorities and get some perspective on how she is hurting an institution that has diligently served the people of San Francisco.

  196. Vilen Gazarov Says:

I support Dr Day. He was a great chancellor.

    Vilen Gazarov
    A&E Dept.

  197. Eva Schiorring Says:

Dr. Day was a terrific leader who worked very hard for the college. He left an impressive legacy and Ms. Harris is doing an injustice to him and to CCSF if she continues to pursue this matter. Further, the timing of this could not be more devastating for the college and its many students. CCSF desperately needs to pursue all the funding possible to meet the needs of a student population that, especially during the recession, will continue to increase each semester. The rumors created by Ms. Harris undermine the college’s efforts to raise the funds that are required to serve the many people of San Francisco who rely on CCSF to provide them with access to affordable, high quality education and workforce training program.

  198. Denise Phan Says:

    I definitely support Dr. Day.

    Denise Phan-Custodian

  199. James B. Lewis Says:

    I heartily endorse this letter.

I cannot understand what motivates Ms. Harris to pursue this matter as if significant wrongdoings were involved.

  200. Gerry Frisby Says:

I have known Dr. Day for over 25 years and his commitment to the sector has never waivered. He has provided exemplary leadership and always has put the students’ academic and personal development needs at the forefront of every iniative. San Francisco was given an invaluable gift!!

  201. Nicole Wendel Says:

    I endorse the letter.

  202. Leon Luey Says:

The best chancellors during my years at City College were the first and the last: Lou Batmale and Philip Day. The years between were less exemplary. Dr. Day was willing and able to do the heavy lifting required by two successful bond campaigns. The Grand Jury indicates that Dr. Day, Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist did nothing warranting an indictment.

    Leon Luey
    Mathematics Department (retired)

  203. Nancy Wolfe Says:

I worked with these people for a number of years and saw their great commitment to the college and education in general. It is disheartening to see time and energy spent attacking good people while so many other causes need attention. I hope this is resolved quickly. I commend Julia (another tireless supporter of all that community colleges stand for) for taking this on.

    Nancy Wolfe, Ph.D.

  204. AFT 2121 Executive Board Says:

    Julia,
The Executive Board of AFT 2121, the City College of San Francisco faculty union, has officially endorsed your letter in support of Dr. Phil Day, Jim Blomquist, and Steve Herman.
    Thank you very much.

  205. Julia Thomas Says:

Thank you for writing this letter, Julia. Please add my name.
I have worked at CCSF for almost 30 years and am very grateful for all that Chancellor Day and the others have done for the students and faculty.

  206. Suzanne Korey Says:

I have complete confidence in the work of these three professionals and find it despicable that the District Attorney used them as a platform for her political campaign. There was no personal gain on anyone’s part and the San Francisco community will benefit for years to come from their hard work, particularly on the part of Dr Day.

  207. Kelley Karandjeff Says:

    Julia-

Thank you for compiling this most important letter of support for Dr. Day, James Blomquist and Stephen Herman. CCSF has benefited immensely from their leadership, commitment and integrity.

    Best,
    Kelley Karandjeff

  208. Andrea Speraw Says:

I fully and unequivocally support and endorse this letter.

  209. Chet Roaman Says:

Please add me to this impressive list of supporters of the unequivocal facts in Julia Bergman’s letter.

Many of the facts related to this issue have not come out, and I am convinced that when they do, Dr. Phil Day, Mr. Stephen Herman, and Mr. James Blomquist, will be exonerated of guilt, and the shadowy political underpinnings in this issue will emerge. The work of Dr. Day and his adminstrative team was for the sole benefit of the college.

    Chet Roaman
    retired

  210. John Wilde Says:

Yes, Julia, please do add my support to this well-written letter. Knowing Dr. Day and Stephen Herman, I cannot believe the allegations against them. Having been at CCSF for about 20 years, I have seen many administrators come and go. These folks, in particular, are among the best and are truly dedicated to education and the betterment of CCSF. Without their leadership and commitment to the Chinese community in San Francisco, the building of the new Chinatown Campus would never have become a reality.

It is important that we now show our deserved support for them.

    John (Jack) Wilde, Ph.D.
    DSPS Counselor

  211. Carmela Bozina Says:

As a strong supporter of CCSF and its programs, it has been difficult not to notice the big strides Philip Day made for CCSF. When CCSF comes up in conversations in neighborhood coffee corners, gathering places, and conversations among parents in neighborhood playgrounds, there is a renewed enthusiasm and fervor for the College that Day’s efforts have contributed to enormously. It is difficult to understand how and why Kamala Harris – once enjoying her own considerable following in the City – allowed herself to be led into this trap and to be so misguided as to make the current charges against Philip Day.

  212. Deanna Abma Says:

I fully support and endorse this letter.

  213. Frank A. Lombardo Says:

I strongly support Dr. Philip Day. It is sad when an honest and hard working educator and leader is being attacked for improving the lives of individuals. I have known Dr. Day for over 20 years and have never known him to act for personal gain, but he does support and has improved the access to higher education.

This allegation smells and smells bad. When it is all done, his and the actions of others will be vindicated, but their reputations will be tainted.

  214. Ken Lee Says:

Please add my name to this letter of support for Dr. Day, James Blomquist and Steven Herman.

  215. Gene Roberts Says:

Although I retired from the Chemistry Department in 1982,it seems as though Philip Day has brought back the leadership and the passion for the College that I remember with so much pleasure under the administration of Lou Batmale.

  216. Steven Glick Says:

I would like to add my name in support of former Chancellor Philip Day, Stephen Herman, and James Blomquist. For more than a decade, I’ve known and worked with all three and have had numerous opportunities to observe them in and out of the workplace. In all of the hundreds of meetings, emails, memos, and other communications between Dr. Day, Stephen, Jim and me, I’ve never doubted their honesty, integrity and dedication to the tens of thousands of students who have been the beneficiaries of their efforts. Each in his own way has contributed to a new and better College.

  217. Karen Saginor Says:

I want to add my name with so many others in support of this letter. Day, Blomquist and Herman are being targeted for reasons that have nothing to do with the public good. This is the abuse of taxpayer’s money.

  218. Irene Kaufman Says:

I support and endorse Julia Bergman’s letter.

If errors in judgement were made, and the funds have been repaid, that should be the end of it. If further action is warranted, the City College Board of Trustees should be allowed to take whatever steps they deem necessary.

  219. Camilla Bixler, ESL Says:

Dr. Day is an outstanding leader who deserves the thanks of every San Franciscan for his contributions to City College, not this shabby, seemingly politically inspired legal abuse. The charges against Dr. Day, Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist should be dropped.

  220. Vicki Legion Says:

I support this letter in support of Dr. Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist wholeheartedly. I am shocked at the prioritization of taxpayer resources on this matter. Since the issues themselves are so extremely thin, it causes me to wonder if there is political motivation behind the charges.

  221. Carlota del Portillo Says:

    I support Julia Bergman’s letter.

It is a shame that political aspirations may smear the reputation of three worthy administrators that have contributed so much to City College.

The leadership of Dr. Day was crucial in the building of the Mission Campus of City College. The excellent work and support of the other administrators helped make this dream a reality.

The City College Board of Trustees, an elected body, has full authority to take all appropriate actions should there be any wrongdoing or mismanagement uncovered. They should be allowed to fulfill their duties.

  222. Carlota Maria Asturias Says:

Please add my name to the ever growing list of individuals that endorse and support Dr. Philip Day, Stephen Herman, and James Blomquist.
These three professionals have done much in support of CCSF and deserve our support.

  223. Carlita Martinez Says:

Julia, I am glad, and thank you for taking the initiative to write this letter in support of our three City College administrators, former Chancellor Dr. Philip R. Day, Jr., and current administrators Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. I gladly will sign my name of support on this document.

  224. Sarah McCuskey Says:

I strongly support the letter commending Dr. Day, Steven Herman and James Blomquist. I am recently retired from City College, but have felt very proud of the college during Dr. Days presence as Chancellor. He was able to bring the college personnel together, accomplishing many tasks. He deserves thanks from all of San Francisco for his dedicated work on behalf of our community college.

  225. Tina Martin Says:

I’m grateful to Julia Bergman for expressing so well the sentiments I feel and those I hear from everyone I meet on campus. I have confidence that Dr. Day, who served our community for ten years as an outstanding leader, will be exonerated and he, Steve Herman and James Blomquist will be rewarded, not punished, for their good deeds. At least this lamentable situation gives us the chance to praise them once again for all they have done for the college and community.

  226. Gary Ling Says:

    Julia,
I endorse your letter of support for Dr. Day and his administration.

  228. Joy Durighello Says:

I have been an instructor at City College since 1980 and feel that Dr. Day was the best chancellor we had during those years. That he, Steve Herman, and Jim Blomquist should be treated this way after all that they have achieved for the students, faculty, and staff is truly shameful.

Thank you, Julia, for writing a letter which had to be written.

  229. Ellen L Yeung Says:

I fully support Dr. Day. It’s really shameful to tarnish his name and his legacy with this.

  230. Rosemary Brinson Says:

I wholeheartedly support your letters. These extraordinary educators should be celebrated not vilified!

  231. Kristin Hershbell Charles Says:

I fully support and endorse this letter. Thank you for carrying this forward.

  232. Bonnie Gratch Lindauer Says:

Dr. Day has been in my humble opinion the best Chancellor of CCSF and he and his fellow administrators who have worked so hard to improve the college are to be supported. I heartily endorse this letter of support.

    Bonnie Gratch Lindauer

  233. John Davis Says:

Julia, I fully and enthusiastically support this petition. Thank you for taking the time to writing it in support of a great chancellor.

  234. Patricia J.Davis Says:

    Julia,
Terrific letter. Dr. Day was superb as the chancellor of CCSF. His leadership and dedication to the students and staff was exemplary. I fully support your letter. Thanks for writing.

  237. Christina Yuen Says:

    Dear Julia,
Thank you for composing the letter of support to Dr. Day and the other administrators. Dr. Day is the best chancellor City College has had in the last 25 years and it’s a shame he’s being tried as a common criminal. We’ve known Steve Herman for a long time and he’s always been a tireless worker for the good of the college. Ditto for James Blomquist. I hear Kamala Harris has ambitions for state office and this may be one of her ways of calling attention to herself. Shame on her! Let’s send her copies of our letters of support to show her where we Californians stand.

  239. Randy Laroche Says:

I find it beyond distressing that the finest chancellor CCSF has ever

  242. Eva Cheng Says:

Dr. Day is a very capable, intelligent, caring, hard working, dedicated educator and administrator. His legacy at CCSF is one of elevating our academic status and giving us more national exposure. The people of San Francisco should be very proud of CCSF. Dr Day’s commitment to education and ability to collaborate with the public and private sectors has given the City great national recognition as a fine junior college.
No CCSF employees obtained any personal gain in this current scandal and no wrongdoings were found by the Grand Jury. We urge the District Attorney to drop the legal charges against Dr Day and the other CCSF Admininstrators.
    Thank you.
    Eva Cheng

  243. Ed Murray Says:

    Julia,
Please include me on the list of supporters of Dr. Day, Steve Herman, and Jim Blomquist. This trumped-up case against them is a true waste of taxpayers’ money on the part of Kamala Harris. Your letter is a great summary of the many contributions Dr. Day made to City College. Thank you.

  244. Nina Gibson Says:

    Dear Julia,
Please add my name to your letter of support for Dr. Day and the other administrators. Thank you for providing us a way to make our support known to the larger community. It is painful that the integrity of Dr. Day is in question, a man of the highest honor who contributed so much to CCSF, and who deserves to go down in history as a jewel of the institution.
    Nina Gibson
    Retired faculty

  245. Donna Hayes Says:

I have been at CCSF for 17 years and feel that Dr. Day was an outstanding leader for this district. Please add my name in support of Dr. Day.

Please add my name to the letter as I support all the hard work Dr. Day and the other CCSF administrators have done for our college and community.

  247. Phyllis McGuire Says:

    Julia,

Thank you for taking the time to compose this letter of support for Dr. Day, Stephen Herman and Jim Blomquist. I wholeheartedly support the letter and am pleased to be able to add my name and give my support.

    Phyllis McGuire

  248. Pam Peirce Says:

Thank you to those who organized this letter. I agree with those who say that Dr. Day was the best Chancellor we have had in the past 25 years. He was the one that I felt cared most about our student body. He worked tirelessly to improve their education, including sorely needed upgrades to the physical plant of our college. He also was the only one during that time who treated faculty with respect. I do not think his actions were criminal, and apparently neither did two Grand Juries. (As a former Criminal Grand Jury member, I know how seriously these juries take their work.) I am offended that Kamala Harris pounced on what seemed an opportunity to grandstand by trying to ruin the reputations of a fine administrator and a valuable educational institution.
    Pam Peirce
    Horticulture Instructor

  249. Lisa Velarde Says:

I am happy to add my name in support of Dr. Day and the other CCSF administrators. So many wonderful things were accomplished during Dr. Day’s tenure at the College. I’m sorry to see the DA pursue this case against the findings of the grand juries. Those of us who have taken classes or worked at CCSF know the value it brings to the city and the work Dr. Day put into it.

  250. Frank Yee Says:

    Dear Julia:

I had a whole lot more respect for Harris until this senseless act of media grandstanding arose against the most beloved chancellor of CCSF. Beginning in 1976, when I began my teaching career at City College, there has never been a chancellor who has worked so tirelessly and selflessly to bring everyone in our great institution together as one. Shame on politicians who have no respect for the efforts of Chancellor Day and other administrators who only seek to make community college education accessible to those who are the most disenfranchised.

  251. Bob Davis Says:

I fully support this letter and, further, find the whole investigation suspect.
These matters were brought before the grand jury twice and neither time did they indict. Yet for some reason that’s not enough for the DA. She did get lots of publicity from this. Is that her goal?

  252. Olivia Platford Says:

    Julia,
Please add my name to those Faculty who have already signed your letter
in support of former Chancellor Day and other indicted CCSF officers.
    With thanks,

  253. Gina Araujo Says:

    Dear Julia,

Thank you so very much for keeping me up to date with news of my alma matter. Though I have never met two of the three people you name, I did have the pleasure of working with Stephen Herman. Therefore, please include my name on this letter. I trust your judgement Julia and I vouch for Stephen´s professionalism and ardous work towards the betterment of CCSF programs for minority communities in the Bay area.

Keep me posted on the unfolding events because even though I now live in the D.C. area, I am very much interested in what happens back home in SF.

  257. Jane Sneed Says:

    Hello Julia,
I whole heartedly endorse the letter in support of former Chancellor Philip R. Day, Jr., and current administrators Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. I am very disturbed by the misguided complaint that SF District Attorney Kamela Harris has filed against these dedicated and honest educators.
Thank you for your wonderful letter.
    Yours,
    Jane Sneed

  258. V. Fawn Lagnefors Says:

Thanks Julia for taking the time to put this together, I too support Day/Herman/Blomquist!

  259. Ellen Wall Says:

I support Julia’s letter. Ellen Wall

  260. Patricia Morgan Says:

    Dear Julia:

Thank you for writing the letter. Please add my name in support of Dr. Day. I think that he did an outstanding job while he was the Chancellor.

I was sickened by what I read in the paper, and was immediately suspicious regarding the true motivation behind the charges against Dr. Day.

    Patricia Morgan
    Environmental Horticulture Dept.

  261. Jill Heffron Says:

    To whom it may concern,

I fully endorse this letter of support for Dr. Philip Day, Jr., Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. These three administators worked tirelessly to improve the state of the CCSF facilities and our ability to better serve and support our students. These allegations are ridiculous and from what I can determine are purely political; all three of these men should be fully exonerated.

    Jill Heffron

  262. Steven W. Brown Says:

I support your letter Julia, I applaud you and appreciate that you have submitted this letter to us for support and input.

Everyone was surprised when the story came out in the newspaper that funds had been misused. We all trust our leaders and colleagues, and we trusted Dr. Day when he admitted his mistake and made sure that the money was returned to it’s appropriate fund. Water under the Bridge.

What more can someone do? This matter deserves a wrists-slap not a federal indictment.

It’s too late for this matter be put into perspective. It’s already blown completely out of proportion, but I do hope that we are able to clear the good name of Dr. Day, (our best chancellor in my 26 year tenure at CCSF ), and our colleagues Steven and Jim. They don’t deserve this persecution.

In this day and age it’s astounding to me that we are spending so much time, energy and resource on this trivial matter when our very own Board of Trustees spent a fortune investigating this matter before it ever got to Kamala’s desk.

I wonder if the members of the Board of Trustees and Kamala would be willing to hold themselves to such scrutiny?

    We are cancelling classes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Because the legislature isn’t doing their job and they’re being rewarded for it, THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW and making thousands each.

We are giving government money to private corporations for undeserved bonuses , right and left and none of those people are being arrested.

Is this really something that people in public office should be allowed to do for political gain?

Is there some personal VENDETTA that the Trustees have against Dr. Day? He’s gone! He’s not a Bernie Maidoff. Let him pursue his career.

    Let’s get back to work.

  263. Jody Wirt Says:

I absolutely agree with the statements in your letter supporting Dr. Day, Steve Herman and James Blomquist.

I have been a classified employee of City College for 4 years, was a student before that, and I am grateful for the opportunities and instruction that City College has given to so many.

Like my coworker, Dana Galloway, I am appalled and incensed that the DA’s office has chosen to run this smear campaign, and I can’t understand why the DA’s office has chosen to waste money in pursuing it, especially given the current economic climate.

I thank you for taking the initiative in getting our voices heard.

    Jody Wirt

  264. Bruce Smith Says:

I have known and worked with Stephen Herman since coming to CCSF ten years ago. I have always found him to be working consistently in the best interests of the college. Whenever I worked with him on contractual or related financial matters, I found him conscientious in maintaining the college’s interests while strictly following external laws and agreements. In my estimation, he is a dedicated, capable, and honest administrator of great integrity.

Bruce Smith, Dean of Liberal Arts

  265. Jerri Strid Says:

Please add my name to the letter in support of Dr. Philip Day, James Blomquist, and Steven Herman. They should be commended for their contributions.

  269. Mark F. Kenny Says:

Kamala Harris, San Francisco’s District Attorney, should be ashamed for not investigating this further before dragging the good names of these hard working administrators through the mud. I know there is always speculation as to the integrity of higher paid officials, but I can personally vouch for the integrity of Stephen Herman and his almost 30 years of service. It is easy to forget that with all the bad news in the media there are people who still have integrity and personal committment to what they do. I believe these men had that committment and this is a sorry way to treat people who have dedicated their lives to this college and our community.

  270. Abdul Jabbar Says:

Dr. Day, Mr. Herman, and Mr.Blomquist were not motivated by any personal gain in making transfer of funds within the College financial system. Their sole motive was the betterment of the College and the community.

Let’s find ways to reward them for their dedication and sustained hard work, not punish them over mere technicalities.

The only logical step to take is DROP all charges against them.
I have served the College for 36 years as a full-time professor and am now continuing as professor emeritus. In my view, the College made maximum improvements during Dr. Day’s tenure. Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist are also administrators with high integrity.

  271. Abdul Jabbar Says:

Dr. Day, Mr. Herman, and Mr.Blomquist did not gain any personal benefit from the transfer of funds within the College financial system. Their action immensely benefited the College in that the crumbling and unsafe buildings were renovated and new ones built to meet the needs of the community that depends on this largest College in the country.

The only just and logical step to take is DROP all charges against them.
I served City College for 36 years as a full-time faculty member in English and Interdisciplinary Departments. I now continue as Professor Emeritus. In my experience, the College made maximum improvements during Dr. Day’s tenure. Mr. Herman and Mr. Blomquist are also administrators with a high sense of integrity. Let’s find ways to reward them for their dedication and sustained hard work, not find excuses to punish them on the basis of mere technicalities.

  272. stephanie Levin Says:

I am in agreement with your letter to support the Dr. Day, Mr. Hermann and Mr. Blomquist. Where would City College be now without their support, vision and inspiration? Thousands in San Francisco have benefitted from CCSF and Dr. Day’s leadership and 10 years of hard work. I feel fortunate to have worked at CCSF under his tenure. Shame on the D.A’s office.

  273. Alysson Satterlund Says:

    I wholeheartedly support this letter.

    Alysson Satterlund

  274. Anna Quan Wong Says:

Please sign me on as unequivocal supporter of the facts and sentiments of the attached letter.

Dr. Phil Day, Mr. Stephen Herman, and Mr. James Blomquist worked together for the sole benefit of the college. Look at the new buildings. Look into the morale and the hearts and minds of the students, faculty, and staff. Feel their rejuvenated commitment to lifelong learning and the good of the college, as modeled by Dr. Day and his adminstrative team who made it all possible for now and the future.

I am grateful beyond words to have seen and felt it all before I retired after 32 years at CCSF!

  275. Janet Fowler Says:

CCSF has worked speedily, diligently, and in good faith to restore funds that were mistakenly used inappropriately. Further the CCSF Board has developed policy to ensure that all funds are used properly in the future and that such events won’t be repeated. I am disappointed that the City of San Francisco has decided to squander resources that are sorely needed to prosecute real and purposeful crimes, especially considering our bleak economic outlook Perhaps someone in the District Attorney’s Office is anticipating political gain.

  276. Carol Femenia Says:

I am in agreement with your letter and support the Day administration.
Also, Chancellor Dr. Philip R Day, Jr., was one of the best chancellors if not the best chancellor of CCSF.
Carol Femenia, RN, Clinical Instructor since 1971 in RN Program

  277. Denise Selleck Says:

Please add my name to the letter and thanks, Julia, for doing this.

    Denise Selleck

  278. E. Cabahug Says:

Thank you, Julia, for initiating this letter. Let’s hope the District Attorney’s office will drop charges against Dr. Day, Mr. Hermann, and Mr. Blomquist, people who have led the college in its forward leap, thus, helping thousands in San Francisco. I urge the D.A’s office to instead focus on real crimes in the city such as prostitution rings that target & recruit vulnerable kids. This would be a far better way to spend our tax dollars in fighting crime and making SF a better place to live. Why charge people who have rectified their mistakes already?

  279. Mel, Maureen, and Ryle Hetzel Says:

Dr. Day is a leader of vision and integrity whose achievements on behalf of CCSF will outlast the shameful, self-serving attack by Kamala Harris, let us hope. Full justice served in this case includes an end to her ability to manipulate the workings of the law to her personal benefit.

  280. Debra Liu Says:

Thank you, Julia, for writing a letter that articulates the sentiments of so many in the CCSF community. Please add my name to the list.

We owe so much to Dr. Day for his resolute and unflinching leadership on behalf of the entire institution. Mr. Blomquist and Mr. Herman have worked tirelessly to move CCSF forward. They are truly deserving of our support.

  281. Agnes Chan Says:

Please add my name to the letter.

Dr. Day and his team have done a lot for the new Chinatown-North Beach Campus. We’re extremely appreciative of his leadership and support against all odds.

Thank you, Julia, for taking the initiative of circulating a support letter.

  282. Ann Zinn Nikolai Says:

    Julia and friends,

For six years I worked closely with former Chancellor Day as his special assistant. No one worked harder to advance the college and to keep the community informed and engaged than Dr. Phil Day. I support him 100% and gladly add my name to your list. Thank you, as always, for pulling people together in a time of need.

  286. Debra Wilensky Says:

Add my name in support of this letter. I’ve been teaching at CCSF since 1979 and Dr. Day was by far our best chancellor and has hopefully set a trend. His leadership and integrity has greatly improved CCSF.

  287. Patricia Seid Says:

Dr. Phillip Day had the dedication to stay for 10 years and to WORK for 10 years on improving CCSF. Dr. Day has always had the college, the welfare of CCSF students and workforce in mind, successfully establishing a collegial climate. I have attended workshops and meetings at various campuses throughout the state; this made it evident how woefully outdated the facilities at CCSF were. In addition to pushing decades-long need for campuses for the Mission and the Chinatown/North Beach populations, he has had to deal with mandated retrofitting projects, ADA compliances, and repairs. CCSF, San Francisco, and California are so blessed to have had Dr. Day’s commitment to public service. Please add my name to the letter in support of Dr. Phillip Day, Stephen Herman, and James Blomquist.

  288. Ellen Wall Says:

I am glad to support your letter, Julia. Along with others, I am horrified by the unilateral actions of DA Harris against administrators who have done useful work for the college.
    Ellen Wall, Professor

  289. Tracy Ousdahl Says:

I endorse this letter and support Dr. Day as well as administrators Stephen Herman and James Blomquist.

    putting it together.

  291. Elizabeth Kuizenga Says:

I endorse this letter and support Dr. Day.

  292. Peter Hoch Says:

I would like to add my support for Dr. Day, Stephen Herman and James Blomquist. The Phelan Campus that I retired from in 1997 looked shop worn and uninspiring. The physical improvements made with recent bond issue monies have truly brought the campus into the 21st century with a new energy. All this was done, in my opinion, to give the students served a quality education in a pleasant and nurturing environment.

    Peter Hoch
    Retired, Department of Engineering
    Phelan Campus

  293. carole fitzgerald Says:

Dr. Phillip Day unified our students, faculty, classified, union representatives, and administrators more successfully than any leader in my forty plus years teaching at CCSF. His back to school speeches were inspiring and memorable for me. After leaving CCSF he has gone on to Washington,D.C. to work toward better financial support for our deserving students. What a shame to attempt to destroy this man’s future through unwarranted and extreme punishment!

I have met DA Harris and am certain she feels strongly that she is right, however the decision of two grand juries not to indict our three administrators can not be taken lightly.

Although I had intended to vote for Kamala Harris I am rethinking my vote in support of Jerry Brown as a more compassionate, fair, and experienced leader.

    Carole Fitzgerald
    DSPS Art Instructor

  294. Beth Ericson Says:

Dr. Day, Stephen Herman, and James Blomquist worked unselfishly and tirelessly to build CCSF’s facilities. Dr. Day is warmly remembered among faculty for his great leadership skills. He was able to harness the energies of talented faculty and community supporters to rebuild and renew our CCSF campuses. His devotion to the mission of community college education remains unquestioned to all who worked closely with him. The complaint filed by District Attorney Kamala Harris is a grevious disservice to CCSF and to education in general. If we tear down our most unselfish, talented leaders, I dread the thought of who will fill their shoes in the future.

  295. Sally Gati Says:

I would like to add my voice to those who have spoken in support of Dr. Day, Jim Blomquist, and Stephen Herman. Not only did they make it possible for us to now hold our head high when we speak of City College, but we have visions of future greatness, expansion, and service to our institution.

  313. James Lim Says:

I wholeheartedly support your letter. Chancellor Day and the others worked tirelessly to support, renovate and reinvigorate the City College system. They should be honored rather than vilified, exonerated rather than indicted.

I would like to add my support to this letter. A trial would completely deny the spirit of the law. These men did nothing for personal gain and their intentions were only to better the college. I’m sure Kamala Harris’ office has cases with real merit that would better serve the city. I hope that the case will be dropped and these men’s names cleared.

  317. R.C. Irwin Says:

    Julia–
Please add my name to this letter.
Day, Herman & Blomquist were not trying to defraud the College; they wanted to rectify years and years of deferred maintenance and under-funding. I hope Ms. Harris and her office drop this case and focus on actual crimes that effect all of us in San Francisco.

  318. Darlene Jang Says:

I fully support the importance of the position expressed in this letter to shed light in the conveying what Chancellor Day and the CCSF administrators Stephen Herman and Jim Blomquist have done for CCSF and the community. I certainly hope that the District Attorney will see that the complaint does a major disservice to the citizens of San Francisco and I urged Kamala Harris to drop the charges.

  319. Mamie How Says:

    Julia,

Add my name as a supporter to this letter. It represents the sentiments of many, many of us at City College. DA Harris needs to show more integrity when picking a white collar crime to add to her portfolio, one that doesn’t harm so many citizens of San Francisco who are served by the College. Our tax payer dollars need to be spent prosecuting real criminals that are a danger to society, not dedicated educators who, with good intentions, tried to raise much-needed construction funds for the college. Now, City College, at a time of great budget crisis, is missing two very important administrators, and will have to spend more precious dollars to cover their work. Does this really serve the best interests of citizens of San Francisco?

  327. Kathleen Wong, ESL Instructor Chinatown/North Beach Campus Says:

I strongly endorse this letter of support for Dr. Day, Stephen Herman and Mr. Bloomquist. The charges against these highly dedicated administrators is unjust and inappropriate. This is clearly an act of self-serving, political posturing by District Attorney Kamala Harris. Without a doubt, the City College Three should be exonerated.

  328. Nina Hagiwara Says:

Considering all the issues/problems facing the community colleges at this time, this case is beyond ridiculous — a waste of time and resources. All agree that Dr. Day was an outstanding chancellor who did much to improve CCSF in countless ways.

  366. Michael Bravo Says:

I wholeheartedly support the outstanding work performer by Chancellor Dr. Philip R. Day, Jr., and current administrators Stephen Herman and James Blomquist.
Together working with limited resources they proved that City College of San Francisco can be an outstanding educational institution that serves over 100,000 students every year, many of whom come from lower socio-economic backgrounds, people of color, recently unemployed, and immigrants seeking a better life for themselves.

I personally am a product of the great work that community colleges provide, and for many of us it’s a tool towards obtaining an affordable college education, or upgrading our skills to become a more productive member of the workforce. As the often perceived stepchild of the California higher education system, it is well known that our community colleges have been perennially under funded.

And were a real shot in the arm to the Community College School District towards modernizing our campuses and allowing us to be competitive with other institutions of higher learning.

Dr. Day with his leadership helped us to work together towards working to provide a good learning environment for our students and give them the tools they need to achieve great things in life. A big step up from where they came originally.

Dr. Philip Day and his administration brought a historical level of collaboration among the many organizations within our District and transformed the morale of the College, and beautifully and dramatically transformed the places where people teach and learn..

Lets put a stop to this political posturing not damaged the reputation of our fine College beyond what has been done already, and jeopardized the future of affordable higher education throughout the Bay Area, and especially for the citizens here of San Francisco.

benefit of CCSF. I remember the two previous chancellors, and the state
the school was in when Dr. Day came. It was a sad day when he left, and

  375. D. Alioto White Says:

I thoroughly agree with the letter in support of Dr. Day, Mr. Herman, and Mr.Blomquest. These are three dedicated administators who have been devoted to CCSF and its students. They made an error when trying to do nothing more than ensure support for the College – and they rectified their error. Nothing went into the pockets of these individuals; there was no personal financial gain. These three people seem to be caught in San Francisco politics. Read the DA’s complaint – and you will see that statements made under oath indicate that these three men were not trying to defraud the College or the City of San Francisco, but were seeking legal opinions precisely so that they would avoid doing so – and they transferred funds from one college account back to another college account when told that what they wanted to do was not acceptable. For this the DA wants to smear their good reputations and the reputation of the College. Reprehensible!

  376. Francine Podenski Says:

Please add my name to the list of signatures as a supporter of this letter. The accomplishments at City College of San Francisco for the past decade should not be ignored or discounted. Sisters and Brothers

Please find time to read the attached letter and respond to Julia Bergman.
The sucker punch delivered by Kamala Harris for her political gains is unconscionable!
Please do not be afraid to speak up at this insult to our college and what we deliver everyday to serve our students and the City of San Francisco.
I believe Dr. Day has done more for our College than any two previous chancellors put together.
I remain, that he was and is a man of integrity!

    PS
How many remember that on Dr. Days first day as Chancellor of SFCCD the members of then, the Classified union, SEIU Local 790 were on STRIKE!!! 4 days later it was done!
Dr Days ability to bring folks together to teach, learn, understand and resolve issues was tireless and quite successful across the college, the state, and sometimes the country.
SHAME on Harris for “using” City College to create a headline story, for political gain. To me, she is a prime example of what my Grandfather used to say to me: “some folks will have a need to blow out your candle so their light will shine”.
Guess what Kamala Harris? We shall not allow you to blow out our candle and harm others along your way!
City College needs to remind everyone about our “great work” as a whole for what now, almost 75 years. Even after a sucker punch, we will continue to stand tall, and stand in support of our former Chancellor, Philip R. Day Jr.
See note below from Julia B…
    Thank you

  389. Susan Lopez Says:

Please add my name as a signatory. These charges have been heartbreaking. At a time when corruption is found in many parts of our government and many are unfortunately more concerned with lining their own pockets than anything else, here we have three people of fine character who made every effort to improve the facilities of the college and carried out their own jobs tirelessly and they are the ones charged!

  390. Robin Romdalvik Says:

I fully support and endorse this letter. Stephen Herman has been, throughout his many years and varied positions with CCSF, a tireless champion for the school. L. Ling-chi Wang’s letter on August 13th says it all!

  391. The Rev. Dr. Franco Kwan Says:

    Hi, Ms. Bergman:

  394. Dana Galloway Says:

    Dear Julia,

I absolutely, positively am 100% in agreement with the statements in
your letter supporting Dr. Day, Steve Herman and James Blomquist.

I have been a classified employee of City College for 20 years (this
month), was a student before that, and am well aware of how much good
Dr. Day did for my beloved City College of San Francisco.

As a native San Franciscan, graduate of CCSF,
    daughter/mother/niece/sister/cousin/aunt/friend of many current, former
and future CCSF students, I am appalled and incensed that the DA’s
office has chosen to run this smear campaign, and I can’t understand why
the DA’s office has chosen to waste money in pursuing it, especially
    given the current economic climate.

I thank you for taking the initiative in getting our voices heard.

  397. L. Ling-chi Wang Says:

    I support the letter.

Since District Attorney Kamala Harris chose to bypass the grand jury process and seek political and media grand-standing, I have to assume that her decision to file charges against the three dedicated SF City College administrators had a lot more to do with gaining publicity for her campaign for the Attorney General of California than protecting the interests of the college which, after all, is overseen by an elected Board of Trustees with full authority to take any and all appropriate actions, including dismissal of any of its employees, should there be any wrong doing or mismanagement uncovered. The Board of Trustees is the appropriate governing body to take corrective measures on misplacement or mismanagement of college funds.

City College is a neglected, but indispensable educational institution for the interests and welfare of the people of San Francisco. Under the leadership of Chancellors Del M. Anderson and Phil Day, the college finally received the kind of attention and support necessary to bring its facilities modernized and curricula up-to-date and relevant.

Based on what I have read of the charges leveled against the three administrators, they had done nothing to benefit or enrich themselves personally. In their enthusiasm in support of the college, they may have made some errors in their judgments, none of which should be condoned and all of which can be and indeed, to the best of my knowledge, have been corrected. The appropriate governing body to deal with such problems is the Board of Trustees of the college and again, to the best of my knowledge, it has been performing its duties accordingly. This is hardly the time to take on redundant and disruptive activities against the administration of the college.

At a time of severe economic hardship and high unemployment in the city and across California, the college is playing a critical role of educating, reeducating, and retooling the most vulnerable segments of the city’s population, the immigrants and the working class. Many on-going projects and programs vital to the college and its future can ill afford such distraction and disruption.

Let the Board of Trustees elected by the people of S.F. and the administration and faculty do their jobs for which they were elected and appointed.

The charges are a grave injustice for highly regarded administrators who have built City College into a thriving Community College. The charges should be dropped.

Thank you for writing this letter. I support and endorse it. I have
worked at CCSF for 28 years, and Dr. Day is the best Chancellor we ever
